Oil filled : Only mechanical diver watch perfectly readable under water (no internal refraction)
Ressence Type 5, Functional innovation for divers.
The Type 5 is the only diver watch perfectly readable underwater.
The dial module (ROCS) of Type 5 is bathed in oil.
The use of oil ensures complete legibility whatever the angle of view underwater.
A must for diver watches.
Other diver watches must be viewed straight-on otherwise the glass turns into a mirror.
Type 5N, the only mechanical watch perfectly readable underwater
First debuted in 2015, the Type 5 is the first mechanical watch to be perfectly readable underwater
regardless of the viewing angle.
A true achievement in Fine Watchmaking, the Type 5N is designed with a “water drop” dial effect in order to achieve crystal-clear dial legibility for the wearer. To accomplish this, we use applied science.
Because oil and glass share very similar responses to light refraction, the eye is tricked into momentarily losing its depth perception. The result is that the watch's dial seems ever closer, vision of it apparently unimpeded by glass at all.
The Type 5 builds upon that achievement by cancelling out what is known as Total Internal Reflection. Typically, under water, a traditional diver’s watch needs to be viewed straight on in order to be read properly- otherwise refraction turns the glass into a mirror.
The use of oil ensures complete legibility whatever the angle of view.
Intuitive in viewing and motion, contrasted in its colour scheme, the Type 5N eliminates visual complexities and superfluous elements to create a timeless diving watch that is functional.
Six facts about Type 5N:
1. The Type 5N meets the requirements of ISO 6425.
2. We designed a two-chamber system inside the Type 5 to keep the mechanical movement and oil separate. The lower chamber is comprised of the customized automatic movement and the upper chamber is hermetically-sealed with the ROCS (Ressence Orbital Convex System) display module bathing in 3.5ml of oil. Composed of 142 parts, the gears in the ROCS calculates the hours and the runner (90 seconds) taking only the minute as a reference from the automatic movement. As such with the two-chamber system, there is no direct mechanical link between the watch’s movement and the ROCS.
3. The Type 5N uses a magnetic transmission to tie the modules together. This is done by connecting several micro-magnets to each other and positioning them in both the oil-filled upper chamber and the dry lower chamber.
4. In order to meet the impact proof criteria ( ISO 6425 ) for diver watches resulting in a possible uncoupling of the magnetic transmission between the dry side of the watch and the oil side with the module ( ROCS ), the Type 5 is equipped with an hydraulic shock absorber that uses the viscosity of oil to absorb the acceleration of an impact.
5. In order to compensate for oil volume fluctuation (dependent on temperature), the watch is fitted with a system of seven small bellows that expand and contract dependent on the increase and decrease of the oil’s volume. For a charming visual cue - the system is indirectly connected to the temperature gauge on the dial so the user can see a representation of the bellows capacity in action.
6. The Type 5N is water-resistant to 10 ATM. A human can not go deeper.
How to use Type 5N.
The TYPE 5 has a unique setting mechanism. Unlike traditional watches, the Type 5 has no crown for winding or setting the watch. The different actions normally carried out with a crown are done by turning the caseback of the watch clockwise and/or counter-clockwise. To ensure maximum water-resistance it has a specific system, the RCLS (Ressence Compression Lock System), for locking and compressing the gasket. Important notice is to always turn slowly when winding or setting. We recommend to first unlock the caseback, then manually wind the watch if necessary, set the time and finally lock the caseback.
