The ARMIN STROM Tribute 1
Reinterpreting the haute horlogerie dress watch
If we reduce our description of Armin Strom’s Tribute 1 to the bare essentials, we could say that it’s a modern reinterpretation of the haute horlogerie dress watch. But that doesn’t begin to tell the story.
Just ask Claude Greisler, the co-founder of Armin Strom who is also the master watchmaker behind the Tribute 1. He says, “We are the heirs to a long tradition of manually-wound dress watch design at Armin Strom. The Tribute 1 revisits that history with a watch of classical proportions that is technically-innovative and beautifully hand-finished. It is my reinterpretation of the classic haute horology dress watch, adapted with a modern aesthetic sensibility.”
Classic proportions
Let’s examine that aesthetic sensibility in a bit more detail. As Claude Greisler says, it has classic proportions – it has a 38mm stainless steel case which is a mere 9mm high.
The crown of the manually-wound calibre is located at 2 o’clock, which enhances wearer comfort while conveying an avant-garde sensibility. The intentionally-slender lugs express the timepiece’s elegant, refined appearance.
A distinctive dial
The Tribute 1’s distinctive dial seems to transition magically between shades of grey depending on the lighting conditions, with a particular affinity for natural light. The plate positioned adjacent to the off-center dial is embellished with a spectacular grenage finish that adds texture to the dial. The timepiece is presented on a grey Alcantara leather strap.
The AMW21 manufacture calibre
At the heart of the Armin Strom Tribute 1 is the AMW21 manufacture calibre, a manually-wound mechanical movement that delivers an astonishing power reserve of 100 hours.
Exceptional hand finishing
The exceptional hand finishing deserves special mention: the hand polishing of the solid white gold barrel bridge alone, positioned to the front of the watch, requires an average of 12 hours to complete. The barrel, visible on the dial-side of the timepiece, is also meticulously hand-polished. But it doesn’t stop there. The meticulous polishing of the hands, which were designed in-house specifically for the Tribute 1, are also extremely time-consuming to produce. The gear train bridge on the backside is beveled and polished in 60° – a process that’s far more complex to execute than the standard approach. In fact, it requires twice as much time to complete.
