Perpetual Calendar with retrograde date indication
Unusual indication of the day of the week, month, and leap year. An ingenious system patented by Patek Philippe uses sapphire-crystal discs for the calendar indications, preserving the transparency of the sapphire-crystal dial which reveals the intricate retrograde perpetual calendar mechanism. Each of the three rotating sapphire-crystal discs progressively moves a black metallized rectangle underneath its respective indication in white, creating the contrast needed to make the day, the month, and leap year readable.
