These funny yellow-faced minions are fan favorites. Konstantin Chaykin also appreciated these funny characters. Following the main principle underlying his Wristmons collection – a watch as a kinematic art object evoking a strong emotional reaction – the master horologist decided to add new characters to this collection using minions as the prototype.
In the Minions watch, the traditional anthropomorphic dial with its “eyes” indicating hours and minutes and “mouth” indicating the phases of the moon has taken on a cheerful banana-yellow hue. The artist covered wide-open “eyes” by recognizable goggles in a distinctive solid frame with real thick sapphire lenses. The idea of goggle-wearing Minions came to the watchmaker as an evolution of the design concept for his Joker Selfie Wristmon. The idea was rather difficult to bring to life: in order to place the lenses on the dial, Konstantin Chaykin had to make adjustments to the movement design and change the thickness of the watch case.
Unlike the Joker, there is no red line around the Minions’ mouth, but the smile reveals neat white teeth just like those of the screen characters.
The exhibition caseback shows the custom-designed rotor of the automatic winding mechanism with a relief minion “portrait” and the word Minions in the original typeface.
The top of the watch strap is blue denim with yellow contrast stitching, reminiscent of the blue jumpsuits worn by on-screen minions.
