When designing the KORONA RG, Stepan Sarpaneva's intention was to feature a very classical and ancient complication – the Moonphase- in a resolutely contemporary manner. The demarcation of the phases of the moon were the first time measurements known to man, of vital importance to the ancient tribes of Finland and even for the Finnish people of today, who have to cope with nights lasting many months. It would not be an overstatement to say that for the Finnish, the Moon is just as important as the very Sun itself.
Not giving in to easy solutions, Stepan first focused his attention to refining the mechanical and visual details of a new Moonphase construction, simultaneously uniting it with his unique visual interpretation. The result is an exceptional timepiece from Finland's only creator of mechanical watches.
The case shape is quite classical. However it has been machined with deep notches, as well as the winding crown, so as to evoke a gear pinion and remind Sarpaneva's passion for mechanics. The dial is created from several skeletonized metal disks, which allow a veiled view of the movement. The sandblasted rose gold finished hands are sober and contemporary in form. Discrete yet clear, they leave the predominant visual place to the Moonphases. The plural is used here, because Stepan's visual design allows one to see the present Moonphase as well as the approaching phases. Unusually large in size with a melancholy and thoughtful face, this Moon is directly inspired from the imagination and legends of the Finnish people.
The result is a wristwatch that is unmistakable and uniquely Finnish, with a new interpretation of Moonphase design, recognizable at a distance and elegantly offbeat when compared to other watches of its category.
