The Garrick Power Reserve is a stylish and elegantly distinctive timepiece expressing the best in contemporary British watchmaking through the collaborative work of two of UK’s most dynamic independent watch companies.
A Fears watch that has been hand-finished within the workshops of artisan watchmakers Garrick, it brings together deft design, beautiful craftsmanship and profound horological technique.
A COLLABORATIVE PROJECT
Fears and Garrick are two of the shining lights of contemporary British watches. Fears, founded in 1846 and still based in Bristol, England, is known to modern collectors for its exceedingly elegant, vintage-influenced wristwatches. Garrick, based in workshops in the city of Norwich, has become a new force in artisan horology since its founding in 2014, developing not just its own movements, but the skills to hand-make and decorate every part of a watch to the highest level.
While operating in different segments of the market, Fears and Garrick share many values, not least a commitment to British hand-craft and skills, and the exhaustive care and integrity they apply to their projects.
FEARS STYLE, GARRICK TECHNIQUE
The Garrick Power Reserve is sized at 42mm, with a streamlined, newly-designed stainless steel case that has been made within the Garrick workshops, and hand-polished to a luxurious degree.
The dial, exhibiting the clean, classical Fears aesthetic, features a power reserve indicator (45 hours), off-centre small seconds and a large, free-sprung balance situated at six o’clock. Held in place by a deeply bevelled, mirror-polished horizontal bridge, the balance wheel’s constant oscillation, at 2.5Hz, is a joy to behold. The applied numerals, in Fears’ bespoke typeface, are diamond polished and coated in Black Gold, while the hands, in the skeletonised style that is a Fears signature, are thermally blued.
The reverse aspect gives a majestic view of the in-house, manual wind UT-G04 movement. It exhibits a variety of polishing, frosting and bevelling techniques that offer a modern interpretation of the classic English finish. The scene is dominated by the sizeable, luxuriously polished winding and click elements, reflecting the importance of a satisfying, tactile interaction with the watch on the part of the wearer. Also visible are the six mirror-polished screwed chatons holding the ruby bearings, each set into the frosted and rhodium-plated top-plate, below which the escape wheel and lever are visible.
Although the Garrick Power Reserve is not a limited edition, just 10-15 watches will be made per year, reflecting the painstaking artisanship involved.
