Christie’s Hong Kong presents the 90 watches nominated by the GPHG Academy
The GPHG kicked off the first stage of its 2024 world tour on Saturday, 28 September, at the new headquarters of Christie’s Asia Pacific, located on the sixth floor of The Henderson building. This exhibition, marking the first partnership with the renowned auction house, invited visitors over three days to discover the 90 watches nominated by the GPHG Academy for its 24th edition.
Created by 57 brands and divided into 15 categories, these 90 contemporary timepieces exceptionally assembled within this context offered a magnificent panorama of the creativity, excellence and diversity of today's watchmaking.
Open to watch lovers and enthusiasts, the exhibition provided guided tours on 29 and 30 September, designed to help visitors gain a better grasp of the technical challenges and expertise behind these top-flight timepieces as well as to share their respective stories.
Carine Maillard, Director of the Foundation of the GPHG, commented, “It is an honour for the GPHG to be the first guest exhibition at The Henderson, Christie’s new Asia Pacific headquarters in Hong Kong dedicated to art and luxury. This location is ideal for showcasing the excellence of contemporary watchmaking. The exhibition is open to all, reflecting the shared commitment of the GPHG and Christie's to promoting the appreciation of fine timepieces widely."
Alexandre Bigler, Senior Vice President and Head of Watches, Christie’s Asia Pacific, added, “It has been a privilege to partner with the GPHG to bring this exceptional exhibition to Hong Kong, marking a significant milestone with the opening of Christie's state-of-the-art regional hub at The Henderson. This collaboration not only underscores Christie's expertise in hosting world-class events but also highlights our extensive network, which unites industry leaders, collectors, and enthusiasts to appreciate the most extraordinary timepieces and foster meaningful dialogue on both the heritage and future of horology.”
After Hong Kong, the GPHG 2024 travelling exhibition will make its second stop in Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam from 8 to 10 October 2024, in partnership with The Hour Glass, before moving on to New York from 18 to 21 October at Watches of Switzerland Soho and then Geneva from 30 October to 17 November at the Rath Museum. The Bucharest University Library will host the prize-winners after the awards ceremony, from 21 to 23 November, organised by MisterWatch Magazine.
The 90 nominated timepieces are in the running to be awarded one of 20 prizes – including the prestigious “Aiguille d'Or” Grand Prix – to be presented on 13 November in Geneva at the 24th GPHG Awards Ceremony, broadcast live on gphg.org at 6PM CET.
