Romvlvs Perpetual Calendar

When the exceptional becomes a collection

The Romvlvs Perpetual Calendar, the latest creation to emerge from the Corum workshops, embodies the very pinnacle of the watchmaking art. Like the entire Romvlvs collection, it is imbued with authentic classicism. Equipped with a perpetual calendar – one of the major horological complications – the Romvlvs Perpetual Calendar is also distinguished by the finishing of its CO-183 automatic movement. Housed in an 18-karat red gold case, this exclusive movement is entirely openworked and decorated by hand. In light of the complexity of the model, only 25 in all will be issued.

Openworked beauty and Haute Horlogerie

The Romvlvs Perpetual Calendar illustrates comprehensive mastery of the watchmaking art and is one of the brand's most exclusive creations. Thanks to its automatic CO-183 movement that mechanically programs the passing of time, the latest newcomer to the Romvlvs collection provides a complete display of the date, the day of the week, the month and the moon phases – and will continue to do so up until the year 2100 with no need for any adjustments. Once this date has been reached, a correction performed by a professional will ensure another full century of precision. The ultra-complex perpetual calendar mechanism indicates the date by means of a set of gear trains and cams taking account of the differences between 30 and 31-day months, and also handling the variable length of February according to the leap-year cycle. A paragon of slender elegance, the CO-183 movement is one of the thinnest in the world to offer these sophisticated functions.

The technical performances of the caliber are matched by peerless finishing details. All the parts are hand-crafted and decorated to create a skeletonized movement featuring a wealth of details and shimmering reflections. To ensure the overall harmony of this creation, Corum has adopted a scrolling wreath shape that is systematically repeated on all the main parts. Remarkable care has been lavished on the oscillating weight. Crafted in 18-karat white gold, it carries the Corum brand name that appears to be literally floating in mid-air. The signature key logo is also featured. Meanwhile, the mainplate and bridges are beveled, engraved by hand and rhodium-plated. Even the barrel has been hollowed out as far as possible to provide fascinating glimpses of its spring. In all, it took the most experienced master-watchmakers and engravers 10 full days to achieve such a peerless finishing on this noble watch caliber.

The clover-leaf of time

While the guilloché-worked dial is a distinctive feature of the collection, the Romvlvs Perpetual Calendar is adorned with a sunburst guilloché motif. In all, four tiny subdials arranged in a cross shape display the full range of perpetual calendar indications. The month and leap-year indications appear at 12 o'clock, the date at 3 o'clock and the day at 9 o'clock. The phases of the moon are displayed at 6 o'clock, along with the Corum key and name in shining gold lettering. The hands and the clover-shaped appliqué surrounding the four subdials are also clothed in the same precious metal. Hinting at the complexity of the movement, the two subdials at 3 and 9 o'clock are graced with a central sapphire lens partially revealing the heart of the watch.

To showcase this exceptional movement, Corum has chosen a 41 mm-diameter case that is polished and topped by a satin-brushed version of the collection's distinctive bezel. Equipped with a sapphire crystal case-back secured by six screws, it is fitted with a fluted crown engraved with a raised key symbol. The Romvlvs Perpetual Calendar comes on a black crocodile leather strap complete with an 18-karat red gold buckle.

The Romvlvs collection is named after the founder of the ancient city of Rome. Evoking a landmark city in the history of civilizations, this line embodies the inherent traditions and legacies of watchmaking. Along with the Admiral's Cup, Golden Bridge and Métiers d'Art collections, Romvlvs is one of the brand's four founding pillars.

The essence of elegance

The 1966 launch of the Romvlvs collection was a milestone in watchmaking history. For the very first time, the numerals did not appear on the dial, but were instead engraved on the bezel. Over the years, this innovative interpretation has steadily asserted itself as an iconic watch design. In 2007, Corum's designers modified the architecture of the case to give it more curvaceous lines and a new shape that has made the model even more charismatic and comfortable.
