The Portugieser Automatic Boutique Edition Story

With a characteristic minutes scale, appliquéd Arabic numerals, and slender feuille hands, the Portugieser Automatic expresses the iconic Portugieser design very effectively. The small seconds and the power reserve display are located directly opposite each other at "3 o’clock" and "9 o’clock", which results in a very balanced dial design. This special edition in a nautical design code, which is exclusively available at IWC Boutiques and online at iwc.com, features an 18-carat 5N gold case, a blue dial, gold-plated hands, as well as 18-carat gold appliqués. Ensuring a precise rate is the IWC-manufactured 52010 calibre. The automatic Pellaton winding system features components made of virtually non-wearing ceramic and builds up a power reserve of seven days in two barrels. The decorated movement is visible through a transparent sapphire-glass back. The timepiece is fitted with a blue alligator leather strap.

Calibre Family 52000

The highly efficient winding system is a refined version of the 50000-calibre family with a bidirectional Pellaton pawl-winding system. Two barrels provide an impressive 7 days’ power reserve. The winding pawls and the automatic wheel are made of black ceramic while the rotor bearing is made of white ceramic. These extremely hard high-tech materials make the automatic winding system practically wear-free. The indexless balance with a frequency of 4 hertz (28,800 beats per hour) and the Breguet spring guarantee maximum precision. The design and finish of the movement was also considerably enhanced. The proportions of the rotor and the inset “Probus Scafusia” gold medallion are noticeably slimmer.

The Portugieser Collection

Only a few designs are absolutely timeless. With the Portugieser, IWC created an icon in the late 1930s. The basis for the Reference 325, which was delivered to two business men from Portugal – hence its name – was a hunter pocket watch caliber. Inspiration for the clean, open, highly functional dial came from the deck watches IWC was producing for the British Royal Navy at the time. From the outset, the Portugieser had the typical stylistic features of a pocket watch, coupled with the high precision and easy readability of a nautical instrument.
