The MEC 1, the 2022 debut watch of the MEC brand, is the product of a pandemic-spawned collaboration - completed almost entirely remotely - among the brand’s three United States based co-founders. Employing a decidedly contemporary approach to a classical horological complication, the MEC 1 was developed entirely in-house by the MEC team. Their concept leverages modern materials and manufacturing techniques to arrive at an aesthetic highlighted by mixing layers of transparency, luminosity, and functionality; Art Deco design cues pay tribute to the co-founders’ current cities of Miami and New York City. MEC 1 utilizes an instantaneous jump-hour display for an engaging and dynamic time-telling experience, with dimensions and water resistance ideal for comfortable daily wear.
Central to the design of the MEC 1 is the transparent sapphire jumping hour indicator, which is backlit by a luminous disc. Minutes are indicated by a centrally-mounted, hand-beveled sapphire hand and highlighted with a luminous pointer. Use of a smoked sapphire dial gives greater clarity to the hour window while still allowing the mechanism to be observed unobscured; running seconds are indicated by a rotating seconds disc with a floating arrow indicator positioned at 6:00.
Powering the MEC 1 is an in-house designed 24 jewel manual winding caliber with integrated instantaneous jump-hour display, operating at 21,600vph, with a 45 hour power reserve. The mainplate and bridges are made from German Silver, with a black PVD finish completing the bridges; the train wheel bridge is decorated with a deep-etched double gadroon design. The case is crafted in solid stainless steel, measuring 39mm wide x 9.5mm thick, and utilizes 20mm lugs with no proprietary strap attachment system for versatility. Anti-reflective sapphire crystals are used front and back, and water resistance is rated to 50m. Each watch will be provided with one exotic leather strap and one synthetic sports strap. The MEC 1 will be limited to 50 individually numbered pieces.
